It’s impossible to ignore what’s happening in the software engineering job market right now: layoffs, hiring freezes, overwhelmed applicants, and college graduates struggling to land their first job.

Software engineering did not suddenly become a bad career

It seems harder to get a job than it was a few years ago - for college graduates and experienced developers alike. Experienced software engineers who were used to receiving emails and messages regularly from recruiters trying to entice them to switch jobs are now facing longer job searches, more competition, and lower response rates to applications.

But, contrary to sensational news articles, software engineering did not suddenly become a bad career. Software engineering remains one of the most valuable and rewarding career paths in the modern economy, but the job market surrounding it has changed dramatically over the past two decades.

What Changed?

Constantly evolving technology — especially in areas like AI, cybersecurity, and cloud computing — combined with global economic and market forces, has dramatically reshaped the tech industry over the past two decades.

These shifts changed how companies hire software engineers — and how candidates compete for jobs.

And then came AI and changed everything we knew about Software Engineering. It became the "new shiny object" where companies race to invest enormous amounts of money and effort into AI infrastructure and tools, while many companies still struggle to show meaningful returns on those investments (an MIT Media Lab study released last year said that 95% of corporate AI investments have generated "zero return" so far).

Here’s what I’ve learned over my four-decade career in Software Engineering:

1. Employment in technology has always been about the “next big thing”. To be successful, you need to understand current trends, employer expectations, and shifting job roles.
2. If you learn how to bridge the gap and develop the relevant skills that employers are looking for, you are assured a lifetime of employability, which is infinitely more important than a lifetime of employment.
3. Developing the mindset to overcome the many challenges that a career in software engineering throws your way will reward you with a successful and gratifying profession.
